you dont need to ask the farmer, just get up early and go push all his cows over then use them to mark your track out!

We did it last year but it didn't work out. That's not to say it won't, but just as a guideline here is what to expect:
Farmers'll not usually give you anything they can usefully rent out, and the horsey set will pay far more than you will for a good field. We were given (notice: GIVEN, as in free) a 4 acre triangular field at the junction of 2 roads (the point of the triangle) to set a good track up in.
We consulted with the farmer and he was happy to let us do whatever we wanted. he even gave us a knackered old horsebox to use the roof as a rostrum and inside as a pit/workshop. We got some plant in and moved about 50 tons of "manure". I'm not so sure it was "manure", it seemed more likely to be cesspool waste as they had good "manure" at the bottom of the field for people to take away free. Anyway, we added a tipper load of gravel & made a good car park for 10 or 12 cars easy.
Then we marked out the track and got his approval again, told him what we were going to do and again put our hands in our pockets for a JCB.
Then the "5hit" hit the fan lol. His neighbours (yes even farmers have neighbours) complained to the council, and then for good measure to the highways agency because of the "possibility" of a car escaping out onto the road (not possible as the bottom foot of the perimeter fence was close-boarded but hey, as troublemakers the neighbours were very good) so the farmer, nearing retirement age and having all sorts of officialdom knocking on his door decided he didn't want us there.
And probably rightly so, he hadn't done anything wrong. We did get the impression that the neighbours made life hell for him and maybe we were beuing used to get back at them as it turned out he wasn't allowed to even keep horses on the land.
So good luck but make sure both parties know what to expect and GET IT IN WRITING. We couldn't do a thing about our losses. Sometimes "free" costs a hell of a lot of money!!

When we finally found a location (decent road, no houses, within 1 mile etc etc) knocked on the nearest door.
They gave me the number of the farmer then told them why, would they mind.
Mind ? They thought it would be a great idea, good for the community !!!!
Since then, we have erected 50 fence posts and the metal fencing all for £50 from the motox club who use a different part of the field (split by a drainage ditch) had delivered 10.8m long and 4m high of pallet racking - £367 incl delivery, got a ride on lawn mower free except it needed a new starter thingy for £20, 15 really good pallets free, a new garden shed donated, 800m of tug rope free and 200 old tyres (received £100 for them).
Now all we need are members.
Dammit, I knew there was something
But lo and behold, a phone call from somebody. They were told about us by our local model shop (in deepest SW Wales - West Wales Models Mike Perritt) and there are something like 25 of them who race nitro and one even had a fg beetle but nowhere to race it.
Now we have cornered the large scale race market in the whole of Wales as it appears there are no other clubs that cater for them. And we allow nitro and electric. Even considering a Welsh Closed for LS, just to get our feet off the ground it would be restricted to those drivers who are registered with a Welsh club.
Currently we have something like 15 LS of different varieties and thats without a venueless MCD club who are coming over to have a look
Just one thing remaining - £2500 for a timing system.
If we get the group signed up we will bite the bullet and go for AMBrc but insist on pt.
So all in all, 3 months devoted work by the committee (who want to see their investments in LS vehicles for what they were designed for), almost ready to sit back and enjoy. Except we are going on an advertising campaign - local shops, take aways, post offices, garages, not forgetting ebay sellers within 50 miles, local radio and paper and so on. Even ITV want to film the new club and track - we just need to agree on a date.
We may even have a sponsor for £50 but must go to a school related cause. So we are going to go through formulaschools.com (an engineering curriculum thingy which is getting schools to build a nitro and elctric rc cars then race them at Silverstone) to hold an offroad schools challenge with the donated money going on prizes and we get the entry fees. Hopefully a few of the scool projects will even join us.
So, if you are down Carmarthen way on hols and want somewhere to have a race on a Sunday, see the website for details.
I hope this has been off use, sorry about wittering on, just that its 2.15am
